Equality and Human Rights Mainstreaming Self-Assessment Tool

Assess your organisation’s equality and/or human rights work across six key drivers and get practical recommendations for your next steps.

What is this assessment?

This assessment is built around the Six Key Drivers and aims to help your organisation identify where you are in terms of embedding equality and human rights, and gives you tailored suggestions for improvement.

Whether you’re just starting out or have well-established practices, this tool is aimed at helping you:

– Understand your current strengths.
– Identify priority areas for development.
– Access practical actions matched to your level.

Before you begin

We recommend completing this assessment with your team. Consider involving colleagues from different departments for a more comprehensive view of your organisation’s work.

For larger organisations, you may want to schedule a session with your equality working group or relevant staff members. For smaller organisations, even informal input from 2-3 people across different roles can provide valuable perspective.

If you have a mainstreaming report, you can begin by reviewing your most recent one. This assessment aims to help you identify next steps in embedding equality and/or human rights across your organisation, building on any self-assessment work you may have already done.

If you don’t know the answer to a question, you can leave it blank and click Skip to continue – you can always return to complete it later.

How long will this take?

Approximately 15-20 minutes to complete 24 questions.

Your results provide a suggested tailored action plan based on your organisation’s current implementation level.

Your implementation level indicates how far along you are in embedding equality and human rights across your organisation – from just getting started (Pre-Foundation) to leading the way (Advanced).

Your results and action plan aim to support your organisation’s development. You are free to choose which suggestions work best for your context and priorities.

These recommendations are based on good practice, but they are starting points for your own planning rather than legal advice or mandatory requirements.

Scoring and Implementation Levels

How the assessment works

  • Each question offers response options that represent different stages of equality and human rights mainstreaming development.
  • The assessment identifies your implementation level for each of the 6 key drivers.
  • You receive an overall implementation level based on your responses across all areas.

What your overall implementation level means

Pre-Foundation: You are getting started — Focus on establishing legal compliance and building basic awareness through training and policy development.

Foundation: You have some good foundations — Work on creating systematic approaches and consistent implementation across departments.

Development: You are making good progress — Focus on embedding practices more deeply and measuring outcomes to drive improvement.

Advanced: You are performing well — Focus on innovation, leadership in the field, and sharing learning with other organisations.

Your Privacy and Data

This self-assessment tool aims to support your organisation’s development – it is not an evaluation or audit.

We do not collect any personal or organisational identifiers through this tool. You can complete the assessment anonymously, and your responses are not linked to your organisation’s name or any individual.

The tool is intended to help you identify strengths and development opportunities. Your results and any action plans you create remain private to you unless you choose to share them.

You can skip any questions you prefer not to answer and complete the assessment at your own pace.

Remember

This is about continuous improvement, not perfect results. Most organisations will be at different levels across different areas, and that’s completely normal.
